Ongar comes from an old Anglo Saxon word, and it means ‘Grassy Place’
There has been a market in Ongar, for over 1,000 years.
It has the remains of an original and fantastic 12th century Norman Motte and Bailey Castle
Hear the exciting adventures of Dick Turpin, our Sinner, who became a legend in his own life time!
St Edmund was cruelly killed by the Danes in 869 AD and became a Martyr and England’s first patron saint.
We will walk across the glorious Essex countryside, amongst fields of golden wheat, to visit a very ancient pagan site where, we arrive at Greensted Church, the Oldest Wooden Church in the World!
Enjoy a fascinating tour of the ancient church and it’s dazzling history.
We return to Ongar by a peaceful, circular walk through the fields frequented by rabbits, pheasants and songbirds.
A tranquil and peaceful country walk filled with beauty!
The tour ends at The Kings Head Restaurant, where you can enjoy a coffee or meal

Meet Jane at the beautiful and atmospheric former Stage Coach Inn, the 17th Century Kings Head Restaurant, and receive a warm welcome!

Walk across the fields along ‘The Essex Way’ to Greensted Church, The Oldest Wooden Church in the World!
See wonderful views of across fields of beautiful open Essex countryside.

On arrival at church, there will be time to have a picnic and coffee stop in the heart of beautiful countryside!
Guests please bring a flask of tea or coffee and a small snack to enjoy here
